Fractal Law gives us a practical test for every ask we make of someone: does it build them up, or does it draw down reserves they don't have to spare?
This isn't growth versus extraction. It's intentional, purposeful growth and destruction — versus unmitigated growth and destruction. A healthy cell grows and dies on purpose: it builds what the system needs and clears away what it doesn't, in balance with what can be replenished. A cancerous one does neither on purpose — it simply grows past what the system can sustain. That same pattern repeats at every scale HELPP touches: individual, family, community, and civilization.
This is the pattern HELPP is built explicitly against: purposeful and meaningful contribution versus persistent extraction and depletion. Extraction culture treats people as resources to be drawn down rather than humans with real, variable capacity — asking for more than someone can sustainably give, over and over, until there's nothing left to draw on. It's the default posture of most institutions people encounter when they're already struggling.
Matching real capacity to real roles isn't just a philosophy for the people HELPP serves — it's how we try to run the organization itself. "Not right now" is treated as a legitimate answer, not a lesser one, whether it comes from a program participant, a volunteer, or a board member.
